Valbona to Theth hike: the trail, the Koman ferry and where to sleep

The walk over Qafa e Valbonës links the two best-known valleys of the Albanian Alps. Most people do it in one long day, often with the Lake Koman ferry on the way in. Trail facts come from the protected-areas administration and the Peaks of the Balkans trail, and ferry facts from the operator. Checked 21 October 2026.

The trail

The pass, Qafa e Valbonës, is at 1,759 m. The marked footpath runs 9.5 km from the Gjelaj neighbourhood of Rragam, at the top of the Valbona valley, to Gjelaj in Theth. That's according to ATSH, Albania's state news agency, reporting the Kukës protected-areas administration (ADZM Kukës). Both valleys are part of the Albanian Alps National Park.

You can walk it either way, but Valbona to Theth is easier: about 630 m of climb to the pass, against about 850 m starting from Theth.

Peaks of the Balkans, the cross-border trail that uses this crossing, measures its Theth–Valbona stage at 13.9 km with 1,068 m of ascent, about 7 hours. Distances depend on where you start and finish, so plan for a full day.

Season

Peaks of the Balkans gives the usual walking season for the crossing as about mid-June to early October.

Outside it, conditions get serious. The US State Department notes that from November to April Albania's mountains get heavy snow, ice and dense fog, with severe avalanche risk for hikers, and that summer wildfires (July to September) can destroy hiking trails.

Getting there: the Koman ferry

The classic way into Valbona is by boat on Lake Koman. Koman Lake Ferry Berisha runs its car ferry every day from 15 April to 5 November, leaving Koman at 09:00 and Fierzë at 13:00. The trip takes about 2 h 30 min.

Fares on Berisha's site: €8.80 per person online, or €10 (1,000 lek) in cash. Bicycles are €10.60 and motorbikes €18.50 online. Cars pay by area, €7 per m² online or €8 per m² in cash, so a 1.5 m × 3.2 m car (4.8 m²) is €33.60 online. PayPal payments add 5%. Berisha says it takes payment only by PayPal or on board, and warns not to pay strangers on the road to Koman or Fierzë who offer trips or tickets.

Berisha also runs the smaller Dragobia boat for passengers and motorbikes, leaving Fierzë at 06:00 and Koman at 09:00. Be there 15 minutes early on foot, or 30 minutes with a vehicle. Cars can't enter the terminal tunnel without a booking.

Transfers listed by Berisha: Shkodër–Koman at 06:45 (€8) and Tirana–Koman at 05:30 (€12); Fierzë–Valbona at 12:00 and 16:00, and Valbona–Fierzë at 10:30 (€8 each); Shkodër–Theth at 07:00 and 14:00, and Theth–Shkodër at 11:00 and 17:00 (€12 each). Pick-ups are paid online, except Tirana–Koman, which you can pay in cash.

One way to do it

Day 1: Shkodër to Koman by minibus, the 09:00 ferry to Fierzë, then a transfer to Valbona. Day 2: walk over the pass to Theth. Day 3: the minibus from Theth back to Shkodër. Check the operator's times for your dates before you book anything you can't move.

Where to sleep

In Theth: Bujtina Polia is a family guesthouse that opened in 2002, with home cooking and Shkodër–Theth transfers, open April to November. Gjeçaj Guesthouse has five rooms and its own restaurant, and has been in Theth since 2007. Villa Gurra is 50 m from the centre, with private bathrooms and local cooking. Hotel Thethi is a traditional alpine hotel inside the national park.

In Valbona: Krojet e Rrogamit, in Rragam at the top of the valley, has double, triple, quadruple and family rooms (some with a balcony or mountain view), a bar-restaurant and a camping area.

Safety basics

Albania's emergency number is 112, with 129 for police and 127 for an ambulance, per the US State Department and Canada. The State Department also warns that first responders cannot reach remote areas in an emergency.

Canada's travel advice for hiking in Albania: share your itinerary with someone, stay on marked trails or hire an experienced guide, bring enough water and proper gear, watch the weather, and consider a GPS device. It also warns that trails aren't always marked, weather changes fast even in summer, and phone reception can be unreliable.

Canada also notes that some marked danger zones remain along Albania's northeastern border with Kosovo: watch for landmine warning signs and stay on marked trails.

Start early, so you cross the pass with plenty of daylight left.
