First time in Kosovo & Albania?
Welcome. Two neighbouring countries, one language, and a short list of things worth knowing before you land.
🛂 Entry and visas
The rules depend on the passport you hold, so check the official pages before you book. We don't paraphrase them here.
- Kosovo: Ministry of Foreign Affairs: visas
- Albania: Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs: visa regime for foreigners
- Your own government's travel advice is worth a read too, for example the UK's for Kosovo and Albania, or the US State Department's for Kosovo and Albania.
- Connecting through the Schengen area? The EU's new Entry/Exit System applies there: see travel essentials.
💶 Money
- Kosovo uses the euro (Central Bank of Kosovo).
- Albania uses the lek (ALL), issued by the Bank of Albania, which publishes the official rates. Our converter uses them.
🚗 Getting between the two

- Prishtina to Tirana airport is about 242 km on the Rruga e Kombit highway, roughly 3 h 15 min without stops. Full route, border and toll notes: driving Tirana–Prishtina.
- No car? Buses, taxis and flights between the two capitals: Prishtina to Tirana without a car. Landing first? From Prishtina airport · from Tirana airport.
- In town, taxi apps show the price up front: SCAN Ride, ETAXI, Nisu and Patoko in Prishtina, and Patoko and Speed Taxi Albania in Tirana. Store links: taxi apps.
- Border crossings between Kosovo and Albania can have queues around holidays and in summer (UK travel advice). Bring water and snacks.
- Driving a car in? Kosovo needs locally bought third-party insurance (the green card isn't valid there), while Albania asks for a green card. Details: essentials and car rental tips.
- Flying in? See flights for nonstop routes from Europe and connections from North America.
📱 SIM cards and eSIMs
Local networks in both countries sell prepaid SIMs and eSIMs. Which ones, and where to buy: essentials and our eSIM guide.
🛟 Safety basics
- Emergency number 112 works in both countries; the direct police, fire and ambulance numbers are on emergency numbers.
- Watch for pickpockets in tourist areas, on buses and at airports (UK travel advice).
- Hiking in the remote north of Albania near the Kosovo border: stay on marked paths, as some unexploded landmines remain (UK travel advice). Our hiking page lists marked routes and clubs.
- Carry your passport for ID in Kosovo, and don't photograph military or police sites (UK travel advice). Drug penalties are severe in both countries.
- In Kosovo, the US State Department advises against drinking tap water and suggests established, metered taxi companies (travel.state.gov).
🤝 Good manners

- A few words go a long way: Mirëdita (good day), Faleminderit (thank you), Gëzuar (cheers). More on useful phrases.
- Dress modestly and keep your voice down inside mosques, churches and monasteries, and follow any signs at the door.
- Invited to a wedding? See the weddings page for what to expect.
