Albanian weddings
Summer is wedding season, and many diaspora couples marry back home. A few traditions, explained from the sources, and venues that take weddings.
Traditions
- Henna night (kanagjegj): a women-centred evening at the bride's home a few days before the wedding, with henna, ritual songs and a farewell to her family. Researchers describe it as a living tradition, more traditional in villages and more of a performance in cities (Journal of Kosovo Music and Culture).
- Dress and dowry: traditional bridal costume and the life-cycle customs around marriage are shown in the Ethnological Museum in Prishtina (Gjurmime Albanologjike).
- Customs vary a lot by region and family, so ask the elders: they will tell you how it's done in your village.
