Winter 2026–27

Flying home for Christmas and New Year 2026–27: dates, winter roads and what to bring

The end-of-year trip home is the second big travel season after summer. This guide sticks to what official sources say: airport traffic figures, public holiday laws, traffic law and US State Department travel pages. We don't publish fares.

How busy December gets

Prishtina airport handled 383,827 passengers in December 2025, up from 336,964 in November. January 2025 had 343,799 (Kosovo Civil Aviation Authority statistics).

Tirana airport handled 797,152 passengers in December 2025, up from 765,890 in November. January 2025 had 699,501 (Tirana International Airport's 2025 traffic report).

Neither airport publishes daily figures, so we can't say which days are busiest. What the monthly numbers do show is that December is busier than the months either side of it.

Public holidays over the season

Kosovo: Catholic Christmas (25 December), New Year (1 and 2 January) and Orthodox Christmas (7 January) are official holidays. When one falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the next working day is off.

Albania: National Youth Day (8 December), Christmas (25 December) and New Year (1 and 2 January) are official holidays. A holiday that falls on a weekend moves to the following working day.

In 2026, 25 December is a Friday. On 2027's calendar, 1 January is a Friday and 2 January a Saturday, so under both countries' rules the second New Year holiday moves to the next working day. Expect offices, and some shops, to close on these days.

When to book

With December busier than November and January at both airports, the holiday dates are the ones that fill first. Book as early as you can, compare a whole month on a fare calendar before choosing days, and set a fare alert. We don't print fares because they change daily.

Flying into Tirana? The US State Department says flights there are frequently delayed or cancelled by heavy fog in the winter months, and to be ready for last-minute changes, long delays, alternate routings or overland transfers. Leave slack around connections and the first night.

If a flight is delayed, cancelled or overbooked, our compensation checker shows which rule likely covers it. Weather counts as an extraordinary circumstance under EU rules, so fog delays usually don't earn compensation, but the airline still owes you care while you wait.

Driving in Kosovo in winter

Kosovo's road traffic law says vehicles must have winter equipment from 15 November to 15 March. When the road is covered with snow or ice, driving without it is prohibited; the fine is €40.

The same law bans tyres with permanent anti-slip elements (studs), using snow chains when no part of the road has snow or ice, and driving onto a public road without clearing the snow off your car.

The US State Department notes that mountain roads can be narrow, poorly marked and without guardrails, that dense fog can cut visibility, and that Kosovo gets heavy rainfall from October to December, when roads can flood. The US embassy recommends driving in daylight.

Driving in Albania in winter

The US State Department says snow tyres are required in Albania from November through April, and that winter driving in those months is especially dangerous because of heavy snow, black ice and sudden dense fog in valleys and mountain passes.

It also lists what your car must carry: a safety vest, spare tyre, jack, first aid kit, warning triangle, tow rope and spare bulbs. The blood alcohol limit is 0.01%, effectively zero. US licence holders need an International Driving Permit as well as their licence.

The State Department also advises against driving at night outside the main cities.

Holiday safety and air quality

In Kosovo, the State Department warns that celebratory gunfire and fireworks are common during holidays and have caused serious injuries and deaths; it advises watching fireworks from indoors.

Air pollution is a problem in greater Prishtina, especially in winter, and in Albania's cities it is at its worst in winter too. The State Department suggests checking an air quality forecast; if you have respiratory issues or asthma-like symptoms, it advises seeing a doctor before you travel.

December 2026 events in Prishtina and Tirana

Prishtina, National Theatre of Kosovo: Qendra Multimedia stages Kosovo Trilogy in Two Parts on 3 December and PRISHTINA. The Premeditated Killing of a Dream on 8 December, both at 20:00.

Tirana: RTSH holds the 65th Festivali i Këngës from 17 to 20 December. TV Klan's Kënga Magjike 2026 has its final night on 21 December.

That's all we could confirm on organisers' own pages by 21 October 2026. Christmas markets and New Year's Eve concerts are usually announced later; we'll add them to our events calendar when the organisers publish dates.

What to bring

Warm layers and waterproof shoes: the State Department describes cold winters with snowfall in Kosovo and heavy snow in Albania's mountains from November to April.

If you'll drive in Albania: your licence plus an International Driving Permit. If you'll drive your own car: winter tyres and the kit listed above.

Prescription medicines in their original packaging with the prescription, and enough for the whole trip. Some cash too: the State Department calls both Kosovo and Albania primarily cash economies, and says many smaller places in Albania, such as cafés, bakeries, markets and taxis, don't take cards.
