The toll
On the Milot–Morinë section there is one toll plaza, near the Kalimash tunnel, run by Albanian Highway Concession (AHC). A car pays €5 or 660 lek per the published tariff (tolls.eu, updated September 2026). You can pay cash or by card, and frequent drivers can use AHC's Digital Pass.
A separate toll applies on the Thumanë–Kashar section near Tirana airport if your route uses it.
Insurance at the Kosovo border
Kosovo is not part of the European 'Green Card' motor insurance system, so a Green Card is not valid there. Vehicles registered outside Kosovo must have Kosovo border insurance (third-party liability), sold at the border or online from the Kosovo Insurance Bureau (BKS).
Exception: BKS says Albanian compulsory motor insurance (MTPL) is valid in Kosovo, so a car registered and insured in Albania doesn't need to buy border insurance. The price of border insurance depends on the vehicle type and length of stay.
Rental cars
Not every rental company lets you take a car across the border. Ask in writing before you book, and ask which insurance documents you'll get for Kosovo.
Once you're in Kosovo
The US State Department notes that all accidents, including minor ones, must be reported to police and you shouldn't move your vehicle until they arrive. Police may hold your licence and documents until a fine is paid.
