Kosovo and Albania entry rules: visas, length of stay and passport validity
Rules change, so confirm before you travel. Everything below comes only from official government pages (the US State Department, Canada's travel.gc.ca, the UK's FCDO, Kosovo's embassies and Albania's foreign ministry), checked 21 October 2026. Also hold Kosovo or Albanian citizenship? Canada notes that dual citizens may face different entry and exit rules.

At a glance
Kosovo: US, Canadian and UK citizens can visit without a visa for up to 90 days (the US says 90 days within 6 months, Canada 90 days in any 180-day period). EU citizens can enter with a biometric ID card.
Albania: US citizens can stay up to 1 year from the date of first entry without a visa. Canadian and UK citizens can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the day you leave.
US citizens
Kosovo (State Department): no visa for trips of up to 90 days within 6 months, and your passport must be valid when you enter. You may need to show documents stating the reason for your visit. Foreigners must register their address with the police within 3 days of arriving, and if you stay in a hotel, the hotel does it for you. Cash of €10,000 or more must be declared. Staying longer than 90 days needs a temporary residence permit.
Albania (State Department): no visa for stays of up to 1 year from the date of first entry. Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity beyond your departure, and one blank page per stamp. Albania denies entry on expired US passports or ones reported lost or stolen. Staying longer than a year, or working or studying, needs a residence permit.
Canadian citizens
Kosovo (travel.gc.ca): your passport must be valid for the expected length of your stay. No visa is needed for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You must register your presence: hotels and other commercial accommodation usually do it for you, otherwise register at the nearest police station when you arrive. Officials may ask for a return or onward ticket and proof of funds.
Albania (travel.gc.ca): your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you expect to leave. No visa is needed for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Children under 18 may leave Albania only with both parents or with both parents' consent, and Albania may consider children of an Albanian parent to be Albanian citizens even with a Canadian passport.
UK citizens
Kosovo (FCDO): your passport must be undamaged and valid for the length of your stay, with no extra validity needed. No visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Officials may ask for evidence of the reason for your stay or of sufficient funds, and the 90-day entry stamp can be renewed for longer stays.
Albania (FCDO): your passport's expiry date must be at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. No visa for up to 90 days in a 180-day period for tourism or business. For longer, apply in advance for a long-stay visa, or apply for a residence permit from within Albania.
EU citizens
Kosovo: citizens of EU and Schengen countries can enter, transit and stay for up to 90 days in a six-month period with a valid biometric ID card, per Kosovo's embassies.
Albania: EU citizens don't need a visa and can travel with a passport or an ID card, per the foreign ministry's visa table. For visa-free nationals, the ministry says the passport or travel document must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure from Albania and must have been issued within the previous 10 years.
At the border, Albania's foreign ministry says officers may ask for a return ticket, proof of accommodation and proof of funds. The indicative amount is 5,000 lek a day for adults and 2,500 lek a day for minors.
Schengen visa or residence permit holders
This is for people whose nationality normally needs a visa. Kosovo: with a valid biometric residence permit from a Schengen country, or a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa, you don't need a Kosovo visa, but your stay is limited to 15 days, per Kosovo's embassies.
Albania: you can enter without a visa with a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa that you've already used in a Schengen country, or a valid Schengen residence permit. The same applies to a multiple-entry visa (used before in the issuing country) or residence permit from an EU country, the US or the UK. You must leave Albania at least 3 days before the visa or permit expires. This doesn't apply to Iranian nationals. Otherwise, apply on Albania's e-Visa portal.
Kosovo vs Albania: the differences
Length of stay: Kosovo allows up to 90 days for these visitors, while Albania gives US citizens up to a year. Passport validity: Kosovo asks for a passport valid for your stay, Albania for 3 months beyond departure. Registration: Kosovo requires foreigners to register their address (hotels do it for you). Schengen-permit holders: up to 15 days in Kosovo, while Albania lets you stay until 3 days before the permit expires.
Driving across the border
The motorway crossing between the two is Morinë on the Albanian side and Vërmicë on the Kosovo side, on the Tirana–Prishtina route.
Kosovo isn't part of the Green Card motor insurance system. Vehicles registered outside Kosovo must have Kosovo border insurance (third-party liability), bought at the border or online from the Kosovo Insurance Bureau (BKS). BKS says Albanian compulsory motor insurance is valid in Kosovo.
To drive in Albania, the State Department says US citizens need both a valid US driver's license and an International Driving Permit, and must carry their passport, license, IDP and the vehicle's registration or insurance papers. Canada says to carry an International Driving Permit in both countries.

Check the official pages linked here before you go, and ask your airline too: Canada notes that a carrier's passport rules can be stricter than the country's own.
