Thanksgiving 2026: flying home to Prishtina or Tirana from the US
A long weekend is short for a trip across the Atlantic, but plenty of families do it. This guide sticks to official dates, the TSA's own checkpoint numbers and the airlines' own pages, all read on 22 October 2026.

Short answer
US Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November 2026. Last year the TSA screened the fewest people on Thanksgiving Day itself (1,559,165) and a record 3,134,613 on the Sunday after, so if you can, fly out on the day and avoid coming back on Sunday 29 November.

United States: Thanksgiving Day is Thursday 26 November 2026, per the US Office of Personnel Management's federal holiday calendar.
Canada: Thanksgiving was Monday 12 October 2026 (Canada Revenue Agency), so the late-November rush is a US one.
Albania: Independence Day (28 November) and Liberation Day (29 November) are official holidays. In 2026 they fall on a Saturday and a Sunday, and e-Albania's rule is that weekend holidays move to the following working days, so expect Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December off.
Kosovo: 28 November is not on the list of official holidays in Kosovo's Law No. 03/L-064, so offices work as normal.

How you get there

There's no nonstop from the US to Prishtina or Tirana. The nearest is Air Transat's summer Toronto–Tirana flight, which Tirana airport says returns on 8 May 2027. For Thanksgiving, you connect once in Europe or Istanbul.

Kosovo's road traffic law requires winter equipment on vehicles from 15 November to 15 March, so a rental or family car should already be on winter tyres when you land.
The US State Department says flights into Tirana are frequently delayed or cancelled by heavy fog in the winter months. On a four-day trip, a fog day matters: keep your return flexible and know your rights before you go.

In Albania, yes: 28 and 29 November are official holidays, and in 2026 the days off move to Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December. Kosovo's holiday law doesn't list 28 November.
Is there a nonstop flight from the US for Thanksgiving?
No. Every route has at least one stop. The closest nonstop to North America, Air Transat's Toronto–Tirana flight, is summer only and returns on 8 May 2027.
